My dear Lytton
We were both greatly delighted at the recognition which the splendid offer 289 implied, but were quite of opinion that you are right in declining it. Money and dignities are good things, but they are very small things in comparison with Health and the Affections. Moreover there is this reflection: since the government recognize your fitness for so high a post they will recognize it for some less considerable and more acceptable post. You won't be long at Cintra!
We had a delightful visit to Jowett. 290 The only guests in the house were Charles Bowen 291 and the Lansdownes 292 -- the latter we had not seen. He is bright and amiable (with a touch of French blood) she is amiable but not bright. Of course we saw a crowd and some of the crowd very interesting. But on Monday morning about 4, Polly had a recurrence of her kidney attack and for three hours was in great pain. I got her safely home, however, and she is now in bed with a bad headache, but not suffering otherwise. She sends her love to the Ambassadress, and rejoices in her escape from India.
