My dear Rector
Last night Mrs. Lewes read aloud your remarkable paper on Philosophy at Oxford 369 and I must scribble you a line to say how delighted and gratified we were with it. Not only is it a valuable contribution to the history of our time but will help to form sound ideas on that most important of all reforms -- reform of the theory of Education. There are other splendid passages -- passages such as Burke would have delighted in. Notably that one beginning "there was no light on the arena" etc. and the description of the prizeman with his "moral palor." 370 This latter portion of the essay was particularly pleasing to Mrs. Lewes because confirming something she has written in her new book; and we were both not a little gratified at the telling reference to [Problems.] 371
This last reminds me that I attributed to your friendly interest the very gratifying notice of Problems in the Sat. Rev. 372 which contained an objection I was glad to have pointed out -- not that I thought it touched a weak point in the system, but it did disclose an oversight in the exposition.
We hope you have better tidings of Mrs. Pattison. Mrs. Lewes has been very suffering lately, but is better again. Don't neglect us whenever you are in town and free.
