Gentlemen
In reply to your favor of the 6th I may say that two thirds of the new part of [Middlemarch] will be ready in three or four days and will be sent to you through Mr. Sampson Low. 70 But although our copyright is not in danger, there is a danger of our being hurt by the newspapers here publishing [extracts] in advance, if your Magazine -- which finds its way over here -- has much the same start of us. It was on this ground that in the arrangement with Messrs Osgood it was stipulated that they should so time the appearance of the weekly instalments that our complete part should be issued a fortnight before their final instalment, so that we reach America just in time to secure priority for the American reprint without running the risk of the American reprint reaching England before we appeared.
We publish with the February Magazines. If you divide the instalments so as to let your last instalment appear on the 10th or 12th February, all will be well.
