Friday.
Dear Barbara
Helas! we shall be at Cambridge on the 31st unless Madonna has a relapse. She is bearing the dissipation very well but the dissipation is great for her. Yesterday [i.e. Tuesday] the dinner at the Goschens' was a great success. The Princess Louise had told Mrs. Ponsonby with great glee that she was going to meet us; and showed her pleasure in a very unusual way, for instead of Madonna being presented to her she asked, immediately on arriving, to be presented to Madonna, and at once sat down beside her and entered into friendly chat. After dinner they had a long talk -- very agreeable. We went from the Goschens' to a music party and didn't get home till 1. Bright took her down to dinner and charmed her.
Yesterday Wagner read aloud to us his poem of [Parzival] and this morning we were at the Rehearsal for tomorrow. 678
We are both in love with Mad. Wagner! We have seen a great deal of her. You remember Nanny said she liked her very much. No such woman has appeared on our horizon for a long time.
