Tuesday.
Dear Barbara
Madonna begs you will give Miss Scott her kind regards and thanks for her welcome letter with its good news of your slow but sure progress. I don't know of any wicked plays to send you but the following books I do commend:
Mad. D'Agoult: Mes Souvenirs (very interesting picture of the Ancien R'e9gime. She was Mad. Wagner's mother.)
Bryce: Transcaucasia and Ararat 786
Huc: Voyage 'e0 Thibet 787 (Very good -- old.)
Kaufmann: George Eliot and Judaism (eloquent and interesting)
Victor Hugo: Histoire d'un Crime 788 (I haven't read it.)
London fogs and society have rubbed the bloom off Madonna's cheeks and given us more headache than is desirable. But we plod on, with summer and the Heights in the distance.
Here's a charming story Lord Lytton sent me a day or two ago. He offered to give a little girl at Simla a new doll as hers was very dilapidated. "No thank you, Sir," she said. "I could never love a new doll as I do my dear old one. For see, she has only one leg, and only one eye, and who would love her if I didn't? New dolls know how to get on in the world -- this one can't get on without me." Sweet womanhood!
Ever yours affectionately
