Dear Barbara
Fearing that in my medical ignorance I might have spoken too absolutely about Mad. Mario I yesterday went to consult Hughlings Jackson who has made the subject his speciality, 658 and he confirms everything I said and more, for he insists that galvanism or any other local application is quite useless: "There is but one prescription -- absolute rest."
In case Mad. Mario MUST write and can't dictate, let her by all means use the left and not the right hand; but rest for the brain is the main point. Urge upon her the fact that a short interval of rest now may save her from a very long forced rest in a little while.
You will have seen what a poor affair the Vivisection discussion appeared in the reports and especially in the "Times" leader of today. 659
We are preparing for the Private View, 660 and on Monday we go to Guildford to look after furniture. On the 15th we dine with the Princess Louise and on the 18th 661 go to Oxford -- so you see our work of dissipation is getting serious, and the peace of Witley will be all the more welcome.

Wagner 662 has arrived and last night his wife sent me a letter of introduction from her father (Liszt) so I go to see her after the Private View and I suppose we shall have them both on Sunday.
