My dear Sir
I have not a copy of the proof at hand but the Review will reach you tomorrow. I have ordered the copies to be sent as you directed. The Initials are correct in the Review. I suppose our clerk made the mistake in sending out advertisement. 652
The editor of the Pall Mall Gazette asked me if I could name any one whom I thought would write him a series of papers on American Statesmen -- personal and graphic -- each of about a column and a half in length. I mentioned you. If you like to write this series perhaps you will at once communicate with the editor, as I am leaving town. He wishes Johnston, Seward, Stanton, Chase, Sumner etc. if you know them well enough to describe them, as I have no doubt you do. Obviously these articles must have a certain personal stamp and not be like the general comments which have appeared in newspapers. If you were to write "President Johnston" as a first paper, and send it on, mentioning my name, I have little doubt it would lead to a taking series. In haste
