Very charming Woman
As I was putting the key in my garden door I found your two sweet cavaliers with your tempting invitation. I would say yes at once, though against rules, but I just now accepted a business engagement 634 for Wednesday or Friday; and as the business is to be transacted at dinner and with literary men, if Wednesday is fixed I shall not have strength to come to you afterwards. If Friday is fixed I will come or "perish in the attempt."
We are just about starting for Paris, i.e. after Friday if Friday is my day, on Thursday if Wednesday. 635 But we shall be back by the end of the month quite certain and Mrs. Lewes begs me to say that not only is she greatly pleased that you should send her such a pretty message but that she will be very happy indeed to see you any afternoon you may find yourself in these parts. Sunday we are always at home all day.
A happy new year to you and yours and may the Gods favor me for Wednesday.
