Dear Mrs. Cross
I should have written to you weeks ago to say we had returned home, had I not been unwilling to pain you all by the report of Mrs. Lewes's health which I must have given, and which I kept on hoping might soon give place to a more cheerful report. But alas! her illness lingered through the weeks -- 4 of them saw her kept to her room -- 383 and I resolved to say nothing till I could say she had recovered.
All the time we were in the country she was ailing more or less and soon after our return she was seized with gastric fever -- not severely yet enough to alarm me for a couple of days. She quickly got out of danger but had a very slow and relapsing convalescence. However thank God! she is now so far recovered as to be at work again, although very thin and very weak. During the bright mild days we have had lately, I did so regret that she was not strong enough to run down to Weybridge for the sake of St. George's Hill, and the sunshine which is always in the house on the Heath. Physically and morally she would have profited by it -- but she was too weak to stand the journey or the excitement. Meanwhile she hopes the girls will take their courage 'e0 deux mains -- and come and see us the first Sunday they are free and the weather is fine. 384 Our love to all,

Yours faithfully came back "in condition"; but the office of nurse doesn't suit an anxious and impatient temperament.
