June 78.
Dear Tr'fcbner
Yes: here we are, not at all too hot, but sunny and breezy, and enjoying the sunshine and the breezes, and the beauty and the birds, and the peace and everything except my gout which is suppressed and threatens to suppress me!
Send me the American parcel. As to Mr. Rice tell him we appreciate the compliment, but that Mrs. Lewes if she could be persuaded to write for periodicals at all -- which she can't -- would of course feel herself bound to write for English editors who have appealed to her so often in vain.
We had a glorious time at Oxford but declined to meet the Empress Eug'e9nie so came away a little sooner. We were rewarded by hearing Henschel sing and play during a whole evening. That was a musical Schmaus! A pleasant party at Lord Carnarvon's 93 -- a brief stay at Guildford while the house was getting ready -- and then we vanished into solitude for the five next months.
