Gentlemen
In reply to your letter to Mrs. Lewes of the 25th June I have to say that she never makes any arrangement respecting her books until they are finished, or very nearly finished; and the novel on which she is now engaged will not be finished for many months. As soon as she is sufficiently advanced to entertain a proposal I shall inform you thereof; meanwhile be pleased not to mention the fact or I shall have half a dozen more letters to write to others.
