My dear Sir
Look at this signature -- do you remember me? If not, as I remember you well enough, and was much disappointed at your not keeping time at Verulam House, I plunge at once into business.
Mr. Stodart, of Drumelzier, with whom you were, 603 tells me you know his cousin James of Hillhead. I am thinking of sending one, or perhaps two, of my boys to him to learn farming, but before doing so I should be glad to hear from you what sort of man he is, and what his family is like? I mean how many are there in family -- male and female -- and are they pleasant as well as upright? Much depends upon the sort of home the boys would have and this you can probably guess at from your experience. Drumelzier himself has given up taking pupils. How did you like your life with him?
Are they sour and calvinistic or calvinistic and sweet?
