My dear Lytton
I have written to Smith by tonight's post. Had I been in town I should have said viva voce to him what you wish and so I have said it by letter and told him why I didn't mention names -- only the sum. It will be a fact for his guidance; and there is nothing like a publisher for a dog in the manger.
Ever yours affectionately
