My dear Lytton
I was away scouring Brittainy when you letter and proof 667 came so that my locum tenens could do nothing but follow my instructions and print your poem according to proof. It is so fine a poem that I should have been glad to have used the pumice stone of which Horace speaks 668 here and there; though I perfectly understand how if it was recently written your ear may be too wedded to the old song to be able to alter it or see where it was alterable.
Don't let it be your last contribution. Prose or verse "my great revenge hath stomach for it all." 669 We are a great success, but the Fortnightly uses up material so much faster than good material can be had to replace it that my anxieties are many and serious.
What do you think of little Amberley's paper? 670 His name was against him but the tone was so good that I thought it right to print -- and by the way the tories howl I conclude they have been hurt!
I must tell you that my mother who is 76 is constantly quoting your poem to me; having been vastly taken with it. What the press gang have said I don't know for I never look to see what they may have to say.
