My dear Martin
The hurry and bother of preparation for our trip to Italy will prevent my reading all the Translation of Horace 498 you were good enough to send me; but I have read many of the odes with great admiration, though qualified by the deep sense I have, -- as you yourself have -- of the impossibility of the thing ever being quite successful. I feel inclined to say of you as Francis the First -- or some other monarch said of his archer -- "Sir I compliment you on splendid talents for missing."
I observed one favorable sign, that whenever my remembrance of the original is dim you seem proportionately to excel; whence I conclude it is the rhythm of the original which interferes in the other cases and does not perhaps allow me to be quite just to you.
Recal me to the remembrance of your dear wife and believe me
