Dear Trollope
Thus far on our most unsuccessful journey have we reached, seeking warmth and sunshine everywhere and finding &unknown;not&unknown; little but rain and mistral which your lumbagious friend thinks less agreeable even than British East wind! At Avignon it was frightful and after giving us both a congested liver and me a touch of sciatica, it drove us from the place before we had stayed more than one day. At Nice we waited for fine weather. Along the Corniche we had one day fine and another half day sunny but bitter. Here it has poured almost all day, and tomorrow we start for Sestri, on Friday get to Spezia, and on Saturday (E.O.W. 842) we shall reach Florence by the 4.40 train; so that by 5 we may hope to bask at least in the sunshine of friendship if not of that grim impostor "sunny Italy." We propose to trespass on that friendship till Tuesday when (again E.O.W.) we wend towards Naples in the romantic belief that sunlight and warmth will be something more than mythical there.
