Dear Scott
Your beautiful volume 237 arrived last night and was duly welcomed. My heart goes out to you and it; but I shall not be able to read it for some time, being just now not only desperately busy with many things besides work, but having all my reading time absorbed in the weari-some toil of going through more than 20 volumes of German dreariness -- indispensable! -- for the new edition of my Life of G'f6the -- a hateful task, though I cannot but be grateful for the necessity of a new edition. Curiously enough the bringing out the cheap and abridged [Story of G's Life] has so encreased the demand for the larger book that 600 copies of it went off last year.
We are off today to Oxford on a brief visit to Jowett, but shall be home again next Sunday.
