Tuesday.
My dear Willie
Mrs. Lewes continues to improve in strength and is only too impatient to get back to [Middlemarch] -- at which I protest, greatest haste being worst speed in such cases.
We should be glad of two sets of proofs and I hope the printing is going on rapidly; for the time is running very short, and if one of the mails were to miss, the Americans might be unable to begin on November 4 as they promise their subscribers. We agree with you that a new vignette would be best. 53 It should be a town viewed from some country aspect -- so as to combine trees, stream, and meadows with distant spires and gables.
Our respectful bows to the great Captain! If he golfs with the severe dignity and restrained fervor of Maga and J. B. it must be a sight to see.
