My dear Willie
I have telegraphed to Cohn and also written to him 398 that we adhere to the original plan of 2/-. I had already given him my reasons in a previous letter for making this edition quite distinctive both in aspect and price from the editions of Tauchnitz. If the extra 6d keeps off a few purchasers -- it will only be a few -- certainly not any number comparable to the loss sustained by publishing at 1/6. 5000 at 2/- is nearly as good as 10000 at 1/6 as far as profit is concerned. I have told him that in case the 2/- does not satisfy him by its success he can with future books reduce the price -- only not with George Eliot.
