My dear Willie
We think the format you and Mr. Simpson finally selected is just the thing -- it goes into the pocket and yet makes a handsome volume.
Only I think there is scarcely enough margin, especially when it comes to be bound. The line is 5 ms longer than [Felix Holt] do you not think it might be reduced 2 ms, and so give broader margin without sensible difference in [amount?] of paper? The subsequent parts will probably not be so long. We will keep the specimen of covers by us to ponder on awhile. A right choice is important.
You will be sorry to hear Mrs. Lewes has been seriously ill since I wrote -- on Sunday I was very anxious -- two doctors seemed powerless. 368 But thank God she rallied, and has now got over the most distressing symptoms though she is still very weak indeed, and we are looking forward to the [feeding up] period. She is naturally of so strong a vitality that when the turn fairly sets in I have no doubt progress will be rapid.
When you have finally decided on the type and page will you kindly order that the printing be got through with all speed, as the Americans want to begin their publication on the 6 November and it takes a fortnight for proofs to get to them so that we ought to send them by the 12 or 15 October.
Mrs. Lewes begs me to add her kind regards and remembrances to Mr. Simpson.
Ever yours faithfully
G. H. Lewes.
