My dear Willie
Tell Von Moltke 588 that Mrs. Lewes and myself are grieved -- and surprised -- to hear of [so] great a strategist being unable to dodge the miserable rabble which calls itself [the season] and allow it to steal a march upon him. Your uncle is more execrable -- because more reckless!
Such is the height of virtue from which we unbronchial people can look down on weak brethren! But this weather is too bad -- and has prevented our going down to look after our property which by the way we have only seen once!
As to the payment for the same, if your checque arrives on 18th that will be in good time. 589 If the accounts are not ready we can adjust when they are.
Except that every day almost some fresh indication crops up that there are people deeply interested in the Jewish part of Deronda I don't know anything to say in the way of news.
Our best wishes to all of you for the coming time.
