My dear Major
The casts of the cuts were to be sent regularly to Tr'fcbner of Paternoster Row, who is the agent for Brockhaus and will forward them to him.
I am horribly uneasy about the illustrations for Seaside Studies. Monti, the artist, is I believe in difficulties, and possibly not to be found. But probably a letter addressed care of Owen Jones Esq. 9 Argyll Place, Regent Street would find him. Has he got the plates, or have you?
Yes, I decidedly think the new edition should be cheap -- say 5/- otherwise it will have little chance of a sale, and I think we might reprint "Only a Pond" at the end, being on a cognate subject.
We are rusticating and zoologizing here in a feeble way, but do not contemplate remaining many days. It is not at all the sort of place I desired; nor are our lodgings (the only ones to be had) very desirable.
The sale of Adam and the Scenes is very gratifying. I can't help thinking the latter must come in at a slapping pace when three mile corner has been turned. Of the former it is amazing to find the universal interest it creates. We saw people reading it, and heard them talking of it in the remotest parts of North Wales, and at railway stations where only a dozen people were about. The book has found its way to the heart of the people -- as it ought.
Mrs. Lewes, who is hard at work at the top of the house out of the way of disturbers, would I know send her kind regards, so I do it for her and believe me
Ever faithfully yours
G. H. Lewes.
