Dearest Pater
I am sorry you have so often to complain of my not answering your letters sooner, I have not always an opportunity of sending to the post, and letters sometimes lay for weeks before they are posted. I will endeavour for the future to write oftener. On the 25th October I received your two letters with the Bill for £50.
We both thank you and the little Mutter very much for your kindness in sending the money. I have written to Durban to Mr. Leo Hirst to send me a piano. I am not able to go to Durban myself on account of the epidemic amongst the cattle. We are very pleased at the prospect of having a piano, it will afford us amusement for many a long evening. I shall send you all particulars when I receive the instrument. Many thanks for the seeds.
We are glad to hear your trip did the little Mutter good, but sorry it did not benefit you. We hope your country residence will prove beneficial.
Little Marian thrives well, she can stand alone now. She has not had a days illness since she was born. We are obliged to keep a Kaffir Boy to nurse her now she crawls about so much. I am still suffering from Neuralgia in my back and hips, and have got quite a skeleton. I am happy to say dear Eliza is getting a little stronger. We have had a very long dry winter, and our oxen have been very poor, we lost three from poverty. I have not commenced to ride timber as yet, but hope to do so in a weeks time. Our Cows have just now begun to calve. Our sheep have done well this winter. I have looked after them well, and not lost any. We have now 52 lambs and I think we shall have a few more. Tomorrow I commence shearing. Next year we hope to have 160 lambs, if we have any luck at all. The 100 Ewes I bought last January will then lamb. You did not tell me the name of your last Work. I have read a great deal lately of a night, not being able to sleep through pain.
