Dear Mrs. Lewes
I have to thank you for your very kind and most flattering letter.
You may well fancy, dear Madam, both the pleasure and pride I felt in reading it. To have written something approved of by George Eliot, that is to say by one of the greatest and most sympathetic authors of our time, is gratifying indeed and again I thank you for what you have said.
I have a great wish to return to England and by so doing, have some hope of seeing you. I regret much having been unable to go last year to Mr. Hall's, the more so when you tell me I would have been fortunate enough to have met you there; but perhaps that pleasure may be given me next autumn.
I transmitted to Madame Viardot the kind passage of your letter concerning her -- and she wishes me to say you that she too keeps a vivid remembrance of the day 230 when, through her singing, she was able to please one whose noble and sure talent she most admires.
Pray, dear Mrs. Lewes, be so kind as remember me to your husband very cordially, and accept for yourself the affectionate expression of the admiration with which I remain
