Sir,
A shadow holds out a hand to me. I try to take it and it fades away. Who are you? I do not ask from curiosity. You send me your book. I tell you how much it has affected me and I express my hope that the George Eliot who has touched me so keenly may allow me to know in him something more than the writer of the volumes on my table. You send me no answer. 1190
Keep yourself to yourself if you please -- but I should value your acquaintance beyond that of most men if I was so happy as to possess it.
Yours
J. A. Froude.
