My Dear Charles Lewes
You should have heard from me sooner had I not been confined to the house partly from the weather and more from a confounded pain in the back which made anything but sitting in an easy chair at the fire irksome. However it is nothing and I seem all right now.
I enclose a formal note which will I doubt not enable you to settle any enquiries as to succession duty on Physiology of Common Life and Seaside Studies. Among your father's papers you will probably find an elaborate statement as to the Physiology of Common Life rendered on 10th April 1876.
I was greatly troubled to see by your letter that Mrs. Lewes was still so very poorly and it will be a real relief if you can give me a more favourable account of her. The Weather here has been very trying but now it is soft and mild and I hope she may be able to get into the Garden.
Will you give her my wife and daughter's warm regards as well as my own and with full wishes to yourself in the new Year I am
