Gebliston | September 26/60.
My Dear Madam
I have the pleasure of inclosing a cheque One Thousand Pounds being the first instalment for the Mill on the Floss in the terms of our agreement. 641
If you are housebuying or doing anything for which money is wanted, we shall be happy to make the other payments at an earlier date to suit your convenience.
There are the 500 copies beyond the 6000 to be settled for also, which leaves £2250 still to be paid to you.
When Lewes comes down I shall have some talk with him as to when we should publish the cheap edition of The Mill. There are still copies on hand and more lingering about the Row than I like, but we shall not hesitate to sacrifice those whenever it seems judicious to bring out the cheap edition.
The Major is still decidedly an invalid but gathering strength by air and exercise at Innerleithen, where I hope to find him pretty nearly all right tomorrow. As I have a line to write to Lewes I make this note short.
always Dear Madam yours very truly
John Blackwood.
Mrs. M. E. Lewes.
