My Dear Madam
I have the pleasure of inclosing a cheque Thirteen Hundred and Fifty Pounds (£1350) payable to you for the Mill on the Floss as follows.
First of this is a £1000 for the 5th and 6th thousand of the edition at 1/11/6 and second £300 for the 2000 printed of the 12/- edition. The odd £50 is for the unfortunate 500 printed beyond the 6000 in the original form, of which 500 only about 100 have been sold. 729
A wrong return of this stock was made to you in December owing to our people at P. N. Row having omitted in their note of stock in hand a bundle of 50 copies that they had in quires. They will hear of this blunder from Mr. Simpson. This leaves about 400 on hand in the original form and we propose gradually to use those up as waste in our own establishment so as not to let any of them come before the public in so humble a light, keeping however a few copies to meet any possible demand.
This being my first day at regular work for a week I am very hard pressed, so do not attempt to write you a longer letter but acknowledging your last which it was really a pleasure to read, Believe me
