My Dear Sir
I am delighted to tell you that the murmur of opinion regarding Adam Bede which begins to reach me is as favourable as we could possibly wish.
My own family and immediate connections are enthusiastic, and it is most pleasant to hear their remarks as I see the book is being really felt as it should be by them. I chuckle as much as if I were the author myself when I hear some passage which had struck and moved me long ago enthusiastically lauded.
You may rely upon it we are all right and the wiseacres of the Row will speedily be buying fast and not getting their beloved 25th book. 16
I inclose a communication from "a worshipper of genius" here who has been raving to me about Adam and raving sensibly, which is not always the case in the worthy Doctor's 17 enthusiastic fits. In haste,
