My Dear Sir
I inclose proof of Title page which I shall be glad to have back by return with any thing else that you may wish to go into the book. As I write I recollect that you sent a motto from Fielding. I have stupidly allowed it to fall aside but if you still fancy it send down another copy and it can be printed yet. I thought I had sent it into the Printing Office but they say no.
We shall probably subscribe the book in London on Thursday or Friday 1037 and the earliest intelligence of the result will be sent to you. It will give me real pleasure if I can send you good news but a bad subscription will not cast me down at all.
I hear a great many favourable opinions of the Scenes 1038 and, what is more to the purpose, I know that they are good, but I see that you understand the difference between a general and a literary reputation and it is impossible to say whether that general buzz which is the precursor of a large sale has arisen about the book.
