My Dear George Eliot
I inclose a letter which came today.
I am happy to tell you that Adam Bede still goes on selling and we have ordered another edition of 2000 to be printed. 349 It is a grand success and a deserved one. The Clerical Scenes too are moving so that I think we shall soon be through the 1500.
I regret very much that you should allow yourself to be so disturbed by an old fool like Bracebridge. After his two letters to me I would not have allowed myself to attach any more weight to his opinions and reasonings than to those of any poor creature under restraint. Quirk's mode of appealing to your feelings was most unjustifiable and indicates a narrowness of mind, inquisitiveness and a total absence of delicacy which would seem incompatible with the charitable good feelings which you tell me the man really shows. No whisper of your persecutions has reached me. I fancy I have choked the crew off.
Newdegate was with us for a day not long ago and like a gentleman as he is said not a word on the subject beyond an incidental praise of your books.
The Major and I are very sorry indeed that you cannot entertain our proposal for the new Tale. I hope Maggie gets on as gloriously as she promised.
