My dear Mrs. Lewes
I inclose proofs of Title page and I think you will agree that the motto looks best upon the opposite page. When put on title page there seems too much printing and the main title does not seem sufficiently prominent. I also inclose proof of what I have thought of as the publisher's note as to the time when we received the M.S. 222 My only thought of course is to put it in the way that will be most agreeable to your feelings and I am equally afraid of saying too little or too much so I wish your advice.
The accompanying letter came from America to-day. My nephew came home yesterday looking all the better for his London expedition and the lameness nearly gone. We went down to the club together to lunch and as he remarked it was the first time we had walked together for six months. Our cold weather still continues but there are glimpses of the sun to-day so we are hopeful of better things tomorrow.
