George Street, | Edinburgh.
November 19/73.
My Dear Mrs. Lewes
I wrote to Mr. Main as inclosed and have accordingly settled that there shall be no preface to the second edition of the Sayings. 886 I did not mention your opinion as I thought the knowledge of it would make the suppression of his little effusion still more agonising to him.
Along with this I send some sheets of the proposed one-volume edition of Middlemarch, which will now be sent to you regularly. I hope Lewes and you will like the look of the page.
Willie continues to mend steadily but it is a very slow process. The truth of your thoughtful reflection as to how much worse the accident might have been received a sad confirmation. The very next day the hounds were out a friend received a kick which smashed his ankle. Mortification ensued and the poor fellow died on Saturday.
I do not like the look of this Ashantee bush fighting at all. The risk of our officers being picked off is very painful. I see one of the Correspondents says "The present inclination of the Houssas is to run away when they are fired at." 887 I suspect the Correspondent shared the emotion.
How little attention the terribly grave state of matters in France is attracting in this country! Edinburgh is more occupied with a confounded Water Bill and London with that beastly Claimant than with the infernal drama that is going on across the Channel. I have interesting letters from Paris but no one seems to know what to expect and hardly what to wish for.
always yours truly
John Blackwood.
The proofs are not on the size of paper that will be used for Middlemarch.
