My Dear Madam
The Poem will make one very handsome volume of some 360 pages and our idea is to make the price 12/6 at which price it will not look dear. For the edition of two thousand copies we propose to give you Three Hundred Pounds and in the event of reprinting, a lordship to you of 3/- per copy for all copies beyond the 2000 sold at the same size and price. I hope this will meet Lewes' ideas and yours. Anything that could be offered for the copyright would be too little in the event of (what I hope for) a real permanent success, and too much if the Poem missed fire.
The sale of 2000 ought to be a certainty, but there are no certainties in publishing. I am writing a line to Lewes so I say no more, but I hope we may have frequent occasion to adjust your lordship in many various editions and that it may prove as fruitful as a lordship on a coal mine.
