January 27/79.
My Dear Mrs. Lewes
I have the pleasure of inclosing Bank Order £777.12.6d being amount due to you on your Works at this time as per accompanying statement. The sales of cheap editions are very satisfactory and the Cabinet or Library Edition 171 is going on steadily. To enable you to understand about this edition you should refer to my letters of October 1877 and last January.
You will observe that very few are sold of the last six volumes of this edition and this arises not from a falling off in sale but because those volumes were not yet published in their usual monthly course at the 31st of December. We hurried them through the press that we might be able to supply complete sets at the end of the year and in this way you will see we disposed of about 100 complete sets. If there is any point on which you desire explanation be sure to let me know and I will make it as clear as possible. Since the turn of the year the sales of the volumes have been extremely good.
Thanks for your kind inquiries as to my health. I am really bearing the weather well. I had a twinge in the knee which was supposed to be gout or rheumatism but turned out nothing but a passing strain of muscle. I got no sympathy and my family said my "action" was worse than Cousin Bill with his broken leg.
Willie joins in best regards and believe me
always yours truly
John Blackwood.
