My Dear Madam
I have the pleasure of inclosing a cheque 'a3400, being the final payment for Adam Bede in terms of our agreement. I wrote to you some time ago that it would not be agreeable to my brother's feelings or mine not to give you a further pecuniary share in the triumph of Adam. Since I so wrote the success has gone on, and instead of 'a3400 we now intend to send you 'a3800 at the beginning of the year.
Adam is indeed a grand success, and it is absurd for the author to bother herself about the absurdities of Liggins' friends. It is easy however to be wise for another in a matter where the feelings are concerned, and I do not mean to deny that I have a very pretty talent for worrying myself even in cases where fully satisfied of the downright folly of so doing. The only whisper I have heard of the matter was a letter the other day from that worthy Quirk, 366 saying he was now satisfied that he had been imposed upon by Liggins. I have taken no notice of his note.
The printers have been sorely reprimanded for the blunders in the recent editions of Adam of which I was sorry to hear. You may rely upon them all being put straight now. The blunders in the "dialect" arise no doubt from the compositors thinking that there is no "dialect" in the world except Scotch.
I am delighted to hear of the progress of Maggie in whom I shall always feel a very keen interest. I wish I were in London to read the M.S. of the first vol. I would not be long about it, although to read your Tales fast is not to do them justice. The first volume of Adam I recollect kept me as busy as possible from London to the Border.
