My Dear Madam
I have the pleasure of inclosing a cheque Thirteen Hundred Pounds (£1300), being £1000 the second instalment for the Mill on the Floss and £150 for Adam Bede and £150 for the Scenes, a thousand copies of each of which were printed last spring. 682 The stock of Adam must be pretty well exhausted, but I am afraid we shall not be able to get through this edition of the Scenes. Next week however I shall send you an exact memorandum of the stock on hand and number printed of all the three books.
There will be £300 to come to you for the 2000 printed of the 12/ edition of the Mill, and this we shall make payable with the last instalment of the 1/11/6 edition, which I think falls due in Spring.
There must have been some oversight in our calculations in giving £150 on single thousands of the 12/- editions as the sale of the whole number will hardly cover the expenses, but on enterprises which have been so happy and profitable to us we are very glad that you should have the benefit of this slight blunder. I would not have alluded to the thing at all did I not feel that my silence would leave you with a wrong impression of the profit really made by the 12/- editions.
These books have been a great and glorious success and many such triumphs may we see together. That the sale of the Scenes should be so far behind the other two books is astonishing, but as I have often said to you, the sale of a book is a thing that no man can calculate with anything like certainty.
I hope this will find you happy and comfortable in your new home and well protected from the weather. The Major joins me in best wishes of the Season and believe me
