My Dear Madam
I have the pleasure of receiving your acceptance of our offer for the Copyright of Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Felix Holt, Silas Marner, and The Clerical Scenes for ten years from this date.
I shall pay the Thousand Pounds in two instalments of £500 each at the dates you wish, viz. 15th March and 15 June along with the further payments then due for Felix, and I hope devoutly for both our sakes that the contingent £500 may in good time become due to you. Should any change arise in our copyright relations with America it will afford me real pleasure to give you any benefit that may accrue from it.
You may rely upon my making the covers of the parts and volumes neat. The boarding of Felix was a happy combination of and improvement upon a lot of specimen boards that the London binder had sent down, and I think he owes us thanks for making him turn out so neat a book. I am quite pleased that you like its look so much.
I got a cold bath this morning in the shape of two specimen illustrations of Adam. They are both returned as unsuitable. I have written a separate line to Lewes, of whose continued indisposition I am very sorry to hear, but I hope the foreign tour will do good. You should go on to Rome. There is always lots to interest there and now more than ever. With every good wish of the Season, I am always
