My Dear Mrs. Lewes
I cannot allow the year to close without expressing my hearty good wishes for you in the opening year and the same for Lewes.
The publication of Middlemarch will be one of the events by which will be remembered. The public mind has been wonderfully exercised by the book and exercised for good.
It is indeed a triumph for you. I was sorry to see by a letter from Lewes to Von Moltke that you had returned from a visit rather out of sorts but I hope this favourable change of weather has done you good. This has been about the best day we have had all through the year. Having some hundred things that I ought or wished to do before the end of the year, I felt that I would probably sit all day doing nothing so I went off to Musselburgh to golf and for the last five hours have been busy in a glorious match which ended all even, the four players finishing in a state of breathless excitement.
There is a little sale going on in the leviathen 42/- and Willie, Von M. and self are much exercised considering what ought to be done. 679 They join me in best wishes and believe me
