My Dear Mrs. Lewes
It was a great pleasure to receive your charming and most interesting letter and had I not been going off to Golf I would have sat down and written to thank you at the moment.
The inclosed is the last we have from Mr. Main and I like his choice of extracts. They at all events are undeniable good things for man whatever may be thought of the scheme of such books. To me it will be like another collection of Sayings by you.
Mr. Simpson has attended to the details you wrote about and is thinking over the best form for the Birthday Book. When we get back this specimen from you we shall try it in type.
Tell Lewes I shall be glad to hear from him how you are bearing this gloomy depressing weather. It seems to be worse in London than here where it is bad enough.
My daughter paid a visit to some friends at St. Andrews last week. Her first walk was of course to Strathtyrum where she was rapturously received by the section of dogs left there. In the midst of his gambols the collie jumped clean over her head when she turned to caress another favourite. Otherwise the place looked terribly desolate and wintry.
