My Dear Sir
By all means send the jeu de melancolie for the Magazine. I think with great pleasure of the new Novel and do not know how I can restrain my impatient curiosity until the middle or end of May, which is I fear about as soon as I can be in Town.
I am glad you like your Reviewer in the Magazine. I selected him very much from knowing him to possess the qualifications you indicate, and I do not know that he ever reviewed a book before. He is the Revd. L. Collins, Rector Gt. Houghton, Northampton, and has written a good deal in the Magazine. Among recent things you may remember a
Few Words on Social Philosophy and How to Boil Peas by him. 87 I had corresponded with him for some 16 years and never saw him. I recently got him to come and pay me a visit and found him a capital fellow not very many years older than myself. His own Rectory is in Wales, 88 but for a length of time he has done the duty at Gt. Houghton.
I inclose a couple of letters, the unopened I daresay as eulogistic as my friend Theodore's. I like Martin's note very much.
There will be more money from Clerical Scenes some day, but in the meantime if it will be any convenience to you we will be happy to make a further payment on account of Adam Bede. The sale goes on steadily and we will be cleaned out by the time the new edition is ready next week.
ever yours truly
John Blackwood.
George Eliot Esq.
