My Dear Mrs. Lewes
On Saturday I got the inclosed note and sent the reply, the substance of which I have scrawled on at the end of the note. On Sunday came your note to Mr. Simpson on the same subject. It is a laughable coincidence, and not the least curious thing to me is that I should not only have taken the trouble to reply but have kept a memorandum of what I said. Simpson is writing to you what measures he is taking to stop if possible your corrector's correspondence. 422
The sales during the last three days of last week were most satisfactory, and as we have a note from Mudie today ordering the extra 250 of Book II it is as I predicted overtaking Book I while B. one is still marching on. Since I wrote to Lewes my copy of Book VI has been in the hands of my wife and daughter. They are deeply, I may say solemnly, impressed.
