My Dear G.E.
You will be delighted to hear that the opening of the subscription to the new edition of Adam Bede 150 is very promising nearly 1000 on the Row. I have ordered some copies to be sent to you and hope you will like the appearance of the book.
On the whole I think our best plan will be to print Clerical Scenes at once uniform in form and price. For such an edition of Fifteen Hundred Copies I now beg to offer you One Hundred and Fifty Pounds ('a3150). I hope this will meet your ideas.
We have hesitated whether to make the book one volume or only to print 1000 in 2 volumes.
We could not make a very neat book in one volume and on the whole we think it best to go for the 1500 in 2 volumes.
If we sell the whole it will be a good thing for us as well as for you, or if it sticks we can well afford to sacrifice the stock and certainly will not grudge it.
Let me know soon if you approve of the 2 volume Clerical Scenes as we should stick a slip announcing it into the new edition of Adam.
I wrote to Mr. Quirk yesterday and sent him your pleasant note about the gravel in his boots. My letter would not help to "boil his peas" and I think L. and you will shout over it.
