Edinburgh April 12/59.
My Dear Lewes,
I inclose you a cheque 'a3130 being a second 'a3100 to account of Phys. of Common Life and 'a330 for G.E. received from Low on account of Adam Bede. I hope the supposed glory of the artful Liggins may betray some unctuous dissenter into a generous act for once in his life. The account of him in the letter to G.E. is delightful. It is very odd how perseveringly rumour has attributed the authorship to this man. You may recollect that on the appearance of the first part of Amos the Manx Cat proclaimed that Liggins was the man and I think this was the name Newdigate mentioned. The Miss Thackerays also wrote lately to my wife crying Eureka "Liggins is the name." He must have claimed the authorship himself although according to my recollection Newdigate said expressly he had not. I hope he will attempt no villainy on the strength of his reputation. If so we must look after him. Some years ago a rascal nearly succeeded in marrying a grl with some money on the strength of being the author of a series in the Magazine. Luckily the lady had an acquaintance, a relative of my brother's wife, who wrote to us for information and we blew the Lothario.
The printers are shouting for copy of the next part of the Physiology. It is too late pray send it down at once.
