My Dear Lewes
I have the pleasure of enclosing a cheque on the Royal Bank in London for £2215.15.6d due to Mrs. Lewes as per accompanying statement which will I hope be found satisfactory.
The only disappointing element is the sudden check in the sale of Deronda and there can be no doubt that we have made a mistake in printing 2000 of the 21/ edition, but where there is so much to congratulate ourselves upon such a mishap counts for little. There will be a rally in Deronda certainly at least when we come to 7/6 form.
The 88 Middlemarch at 21/ and the 3927 at 7/6 are most satisfactory entries. I am delighted also to see that Jubal and the Spanish Gypsy keep up in sale and this will I am sure please Mrs. Lewes.
At the foot of the statement is appended a note of the stock in hand of the edition of the other novels in five volumes, and on this stock the lordship will fall to be paid when sold. You never I think answered what
I said about the blunder in my letter arranging the terms for this edition ten years ago and I should like to settle that matter in any way you think most just.
I hope the year has begun well with Mrs. Lewes and you and that it may prove a happy one to you in your new abode. Mr. Simpson I am happy to say has got the better of his delicate throat sooner than we had ventured to hope and reappeared here today in full activity.
He joins my nephew and me in every good wish to Mrs. Lewes and you and believe me
