My Dear Lewes
Thanks for your letter, and the packet of M.S. from George Eliot. Tell him that I read it all last night and am quite delighted. It is sparkling and witty throughout and he is a perfect master in giving individuality and life to his characters.
I shall be able to write with proof the day after tomorrow. Meanwhile I shall have no fear in starting poor Gilfil before I see the conclusion of the Story. I am puzzled as to how the love part is going to be managed but I shall write of this or any other point when I send the proof.
I am very glad to hear your report of the reception of Amos, which tallies very much with my own experience. Generally contributors introducing friends' M.S.S to Editors assume the character of bores, but you are a noble and memorable exception. Are you going to confine yourself to the character of intermediaire at present. Pray let me know if any subject occurs to you. In haste
