My Dear Mrs. Lewes
I inclose a letter apparently from America.
We printed 1000 of the Guinea Middlemarch and it is clearly going out of print. 747 The prompt Simpson has ordered paper "to be ready" but we must be cautious. He would write to Mr. Lewes yesterday about the bulk of the volumes of the Key to all the Mythologies to guide us as to the size of the page. You both live so completely out of the Political world that the Row at Westminster 748 will not affect the Priory. I wish you had succeeded in finding a house at Tunbridge. 749 I am rather advised to take a turn at Homburg or some such place this summer but I do not think I shall have the courage. I do not know what I would do with myself.
My daughter is working very hard, this being her last year before coming out, and I am constantly bumping against signors or monsieurs and the piano goes from morning to night. She sings very well, though. She and a cousin Loo Stewart of the same age seem to be holding much converse on the future. One phrase amused me the other day. Loo, she told us, is much afraid lest she should "fall flat on the world" when she comes out.
