My Dear Lewes
Your proof arrived all right and also George Eliot's with a very neat Epilogue to Gilfil. I do not know when I have read anything so powerfully pathetic as this last part of Gilfil. The only possible objection is that it may be almost too painful.
I am very anxious to see the next story. Tell George Eliot that I hope he will be in very great form as he will run along side of a new series by Bulwer and I should like our Clerical friend to come out well in such company. Sir Edward is I think first rate.
I inclose a note from Mr. Archer Gurney. 862 Except seeing his name upon occasional volumes of poetry etc. I do not know anything of him, but I fancy he is a large hearted sort of character. I agree with his remarks except about Sir Edward, 863 who has in his later works shown himself as remarkable for wisdom as he always was for vivacity of style.
I go to London tomorrow and my address there for a few weeks is 38 Jermyn St. Is there any chance of seeing you or George Eliot? I have paid £17. 17/- to your credit with Union Bank in acknowledgment of the New Sea Side Studies.
This note will I hope find you comfortably established at St. Heliers, Jersey where I address it on chance.
