Letter Content

Ralph Waldo Emerson to GE, Concord, 21 November 1873
MS: Newnham College, Cambridge.
Concord, Masstts | 21 November 1873.
Will Mrs. Lewes allow me to introduce to her Mrs. S. M. Downes, 220 a young friend of mine, who grew up in this town, but lives now in Andover, where she makes herself useful and beloved by all the readers of good books from Chaucer down to George Eliot. At least that was my fortune in a visit I made to that theological town to find my young friend a centre of of the lay scholars. You will not wonder that in coming to England she earnestly wishes to see your face.
With very kind regards and recollections, 221
R. W. Emerson.
Mrs. G. H. Lewes.
