Dear Mrs. Lewes,
I heard last evening -- with almost consternation, certainly with deep sorrow -- of the calamity which has befallen you, and which -- in the due degree -- is an irreparable loss to us all. To me -- the repeated instances of that sympathy I valued so much are painfully present -- and what can I say of the magnitude of the burthen laid upon you but that it will demand every power of endurance which even you can command? On the profound feeling of every friend you may safely rely -- but the main support must be hoped from yourself: and it is sadly strange that the first apprehension of any want there should affect one now -- now only! You will probably read this after some time -- if at all: I found it impossible to be quite silent, and if I have said too much at such a moment your kindness will forgive
